Lead water supply pipe replacement to MDPE
Clean A Drain Ltd replaces underground lead water supply pipework with MDPE plastic pipe across Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyneside and the wider North East. We are a WaterSafe/WIAPS approved contractor, as listed in our existing business qualifications.
When to discuss water supply replacement
- You know or suspect that the private underground supply pipe is lead.
- An underground water supply pipe needs replacement or rerouting as part of property work.
- A leak or deterioration has been identified and replacement is being considered.
- A property project needs an assessment of the existing supply route and proposed connections.
Poor pressure or discoloured water does not, by itself, establish that the supply pipe needs replacement. Tell us what has been found so far and whether the water company or another contractor has already investigated.

What the work involves
The proposed work needs to establish the existing pipe route, where the private supply begins, the entry point into the building and the connections required. Replacement work removes or bypasses the agreed section of lead pipe and installs suitable MDPE supply pipework.
The installation method and any excavation depend on the route, access, ground conditions and buried services. The connection arrangement, pipe protection and surface reinstatement should be included in the agreed scope rather than assumed.
If work is needed on a water company’s pipework or connection, its requirements and responsibilities must be confirmed. Replacing private pipework does not automatically include work on the public supply network.
WaterSafe/WIAPS approval and project information
Our WaterSafe/WIAPS approval relates to water supply work. It is separate from the drainage investigation, jetting and excavation qualifications listed on our About us section.
When asking for a quotation, explain the property type, known pipe material, approximate route and length, surfaces above the pipe and the proposed building entry point. Include any plans, photographs and requirements from the water company or your project designer.
- Property address, postcode and contact details.
- Known stop tap and connection locations, plus access to the building entry point.
- Any shared supply arrangements or proposed changes to the number of supplies.
- Parking, vehicle access, buried services and reinstatement requirements.
A site-specific water supply quotation
The price depends on the length and route, access, excavation or other installation method, connection work, materials and reinstatement. We will discuss what assessment is needed before confirming the work and quotation.
If your project also involves underground drainage, we can discuss drain tracing and mapping or drainage installation and groundworks as a separate part of the scope. Water supply pipes and drains perform different functions, so the investigation and specification should be clear for each.
